Allowing and denying guest access

You can enable guest access to allow anyone on your network to use file sharing or FTP services or visit your Web site. Most administrators enable guest access when they want to share non-sensitive information easily.

If you deny guest access, only registered users can log on to the Web & File Server or visit your Web site.

Note: Guest access does not apply to mail or print services.

To allow or deny guest access, follow these steps:
1 Open the Web & File Admin program, if it's not already open.
2 Choose Show Users & Groups List from the Web & File Admin program's Users menu.
The Users & Groups List window appears.
3 Double-click the Guest entry.
The User window for Guest appears.
4 Click the checkbox next to each service for which you want to enable guest access, so that an X appears.
When guest access for a service is enabled, users can connect to the Web & File Server and use those services without entering a name or password.
To deny guest access, leave the checkbox unchecked. If the box is already checked, click the checkbox again to remove the X.
Note: Disabling guest access does not affect guest users who are currently logged on to the Web & File Server for file sharing service. If you want to disconnect those users, see Disconnecting Users.
5 If you want to enable program linking for guests, click the Enable Program Linking checkbox so that an X appears.
WARNING: If you enable program linking for users who log on as guests, they will be able to open applications that communicate with applications running on the Web & File Server. These applications can gain access to data that you have not necessarily shared, posing a severe security risk. Enable this feature only if you run applications that require program linking and you want guest users to be able to use it.
6 Click Save.
The new settings take effect immediately.
